Hey everyone,

Being new to having to buy oil, we have looked into it the best way of getting the best price! We came across Boiler Juice to buy our last lot of oil and were pleased with the price and how easy it was to order.

What happens is they have a buying weekend (this coming weekend) you give them your details, and they match you with local people in the area who also need oil. They then give you an estimated figure of how much the oil will cost. When all orders are in after the buying weekend, depending on how many local people order, you could end up paying less.

We thought it was fantastic and impressed with service.

Dont know if anyone else uses them, but thought would post and let you know about them to try and help save some pennies!

Not sure, we had a delivery a few days ago but I haven't had the bill.  I've been on a contract for a number of years and they are supposed to top us up regularly and if the oil prices are low.

But as I haven't shopped for oil I didn't know what the going rate was.  I'll let you know when we get a statement.

Just so I have an idea if we are going through our oil too quickly, how long does your oil last you? eg 500 litres, 3 bed house, average x degrees, lasts x months.

Many thanks

We usually have a delivery every couple of months over the winter.

We have a four bedroom house but the old part of the house is solid walls so no insulation in the walls there.  We do have good insulation in the roof and all double glazed with K glass etc. but even so our heat loss is high.

We've only recently installed a more efficient boiler so we aren't sure how much oil we'll be using in those two month periods, our last delivery was at the beginning of the summer and we were filled up just into the new year.  The weather has been a bit exceptional but since the heating went on in October we've used around 800 litres.

The temperature is variable depending on the time of the day and the day of the week.  Lowest it's set is 20 degrees, the highest is 22 degrees.

Hope this helps.

Hi Mark, Mines a 3 bedroom, 1000 litres will last us a year, only putting it on till its hot & turning it off just using the room thermostat dial.15-30 mins & not on through the night.when I first moved in 14yrs ago!I thought it was great I could get away with 1 x 500 litre delivery for the winter & usually turn it off from around march time, just have the timer on for the water once a day,we have an electric shower.I use to time it right buying when it was cheaper iirc approx 11p litre now its always so expensive.
I have mine on constant at the controls, the room thermostat turned right down if I go in the shower i just turn the dial till its nice & warm then turn the dial back down when I come back downstairs or ask some one else to turn it down in 10 mins.
the hot water control I just use to set it to come on for 30mins 2 x a day
I was very frugal to get this ecconomy.
37p litre wasn't too bad a price in my opinion.don't think you were ripped off don't take it for granted use it wisely it will serve you well.

We also use boiler juice and they're usually but not always the cheapest. The nice thing with them is that if you're not desperate then you can always wait until they have a  buying weekend so that you get a discount. 37 p a litre doesn't sound bad at all. I put in 900 litres last February which cost me 33p / litre but oil prices have gone up since then (witness the increase in petrol prices) so I think you did well.
Our usage: about 700 litres per year for a 3 bedroom house with 4 occupants but we also burn about £200 worth of firewood on top of that. We don't have any thermostats but only have the heating on if we're at home during the day (I am a housewife) and I switch it off manually when I go out. Evenings we tend to burn wood in 2 downstairs rooms and switch the heating off until the next morning.  I like the house fairly cool. my husband thinks I should have lived through a wartime I have such a frugal mentality!
My top money-saving tip- a south facing conservatory, if you can fit one, does wonders for your heating bill. Positively baking on a sunny winter's day (not that we've had many of them recently). And you can dry your washing out there too all year round. Probably a faster payback than solar panels and you get a nice sunny room to sit in too!

Woodland fuels in Shouldham Thorpe Tel 01366 347713 or 07837 363510. It's a 1 man business - he delivers by the truckload. Earlier this year it was £120 a truckload - I don't know the tonnage though but seems a reasonable deal. It's usually mainly silver birch and freshly cut, so you need to store it for several months to dry out.

Forgot we were in 2010 - that should have read "this time last year" instead of "earlier this year". Doh!
